Consoles aplenty for Xbox launch
>> Consumers crowded into stores as Microsoft's video game console went on sale in North America. But away from the hoopla surrounding the console's debut, some avid game fans grumbled about how a few retailers were cashing in on demand.
What especially burned up many game fans was the practice of "bundling." Some merchants, including Toysrus.com and Electronics Boutique, would only sell the Xbox in packages with software and additional hardware, allowing them to charge more.

-An nVidia graphics processing unit (GPU) entitled the X-chip or X3 that can pump out 3 million polygons per second.
-An Intel Pentium III running at 600 MHz (or twice the speed of the PlayStation 2’s Emotion Engine).
-64 Mbytes of Samsung DDR SDRAM (4 x 128M devices).
-A Seagate 10 gigabyte hard drive.
-A Conexant Video Encoder
-A Cirrus Logic DVD device.
-A Hitachi Super HRISC micro controller.
-A Microchip low voltage micro controller.
-A Semtech power management device.

Xbox Sells Out Right Away, But Not Everywhere
>> Although hardcore gamers and market speculators gobbled up most of the available Xbox consoles by noon Nov. 15, most stores around the country opened with hardware units available — unlike the PlayStation 2 rush last year. Some mass market stores like Target and Wal-Mart had both hardware and games for customers as late as noon on launch day. An Electronics Boutique in San Francisco still had five Xboxes for sale on store shelves at noon, a store employee reported.

Australian release
>> As Xbox launched into stores in the US, Xbox launch details were today announced for Australia.
Xbox will be available at retail outlets in Australia from 14th March 2002 at an anticipated retail price of AUD$649 (incl GST). The majority of Xbox titles are expected to launch at an anticipated retail price of AUD$99.95 (incl GST).
Initial quantities for Xbox were also announced. A total of 100,000 Xbox video game systems are planned for shipment in Australia for its first three months on sale (to the end of June 2002). This includes weekly replenishments.

Sony phears Microsoft ?
>> Sony is feeling the heat of competition breathing down its neck. Kunitake Ando, Sony’s president and COO, has told the FT that the presence of Xbox on the market could shorten console lifecycles. In other words Ando fears that the more powerful Xbox, which actually retails for the same price as PlayStation 2 in the States, will force Sony to manufacture the PlayStation 3 ahead of schedule.
