XLink Kai For Osx, Linux, Bsd, Xdk Etc - UI developers required
>> From flat235/TheDaddy on forums.xbox-scene.com:
The Kai engine is getting close to completion - so it's time for us to start to look at other platforms. As the engine is seperated from the UI, it's possible for us to begin work on UI's for other platforms, and just use win32 as the engine platform for the time being - eventually we will port the Kai engine to these other platforms, then win32 wont be required at all ... ive put together a quick FAQ on how this will work.
If you can help the XLink(info) Team to create a UI for other platforms, go here for more info.

Solder Less Header Pin
>> From hkmod.com:
What about 1 wire to solder for any Xbox chip using Pin Header ? A Header "Clip" Pin that can be used with any kind of chips out there.. Read more...
We are proud to show you the first picture of the Header 'CLIP' Pin produced by our Taiwan facility. Those pictures are just prototype picture we got from the Factory today, Final design, and final product will be much nicer of course.
So how it works ? Well the idea is very simple, any modchips out there like Xecuter, Xenium, SmartXX, Akira, or any modchip that use 'classic header pin' could now be supplied or used with that new solder less design. Clip your header pin into the LPC port, then plug your modchip on it, solder the D0 (or use our next solder less design for D0) and you are done! No need to remove the main board, done in a few seconds (stay tuned for the coming video). Now Xbox modification have never been so easy and reliable as well as risk less.
Any modchip supplier or manufacturer can get in touch with us, to offer this new attractive way of mounting to their customers, it will also be available for sale on our web site to retail and wholesale market. We need huge qty order to start mass production, so we are waiting your emails.

Xbox 2 and the Forbidden Apple ?
>> True, False or a Joke this was posted on TeamXbox.com :
When we told the world that long-time rivals Microsoft and IBM were teaming-up for Xbox 2, everyone thought we were kidding or clinically insane. One month after that, the partnership was officially announced and we sat back and smiled.
Now, once again, its our word against logic. Our cracked TeamXbox spies (theyre everywhere) recently came up with some interesting info in regards to Xbox 2. Believe it or not, the Apple G5s you see in this picture are going to Redmond, and they wont be used by graphical designers or any other media content creators. Theyre going to be used by programmers; not for Microsofts MAC products, Virtual PC or any other Mac OS software. Instead, these three palettes of Dual 2.0GHz G5s are alpha kits; Xbox 2 alpha kits to be more specific. Yes, the forbidden Apple entering the Microsoft paradise. Hard to believe, isnt it? We know.
No one will believe us, but dont worry; time will tell. By the way, in case you're wondering; yes, the Xbox 2 will use a PowerPC architecture.
TeamXbox.com was forced to remove the story from their website. We are aware the picture comes from michaelhanscom.com (posted by a now fired MS employee on October 23, 2003). The question here is if these G5's were used for Mac development/support (IE, Office, ...) or if they are used for the Xbox2 like TeamXbox claims. I leave it up to you to decide if this story is true or not.

Microsoft CFO: Xbox will never be profitable
>> From theinquirer.net:
THE CHIEF FINANCIAL officer of Microsoft told analysts earlier this week that the current Xbox console will never be profitable. In a very long presentation, John Connors told analysts in Boston: "There's no way to make money on the console in this first generation".
He said: "The real crossover in terms of profitability delta is when we get to the next generation of the Xbox console." The key to making profits with the Xbox 2, he added, is how Microsoft does the hardware and chipset design, and how it sets up the supply chain.
Avalaunch Contest deadline changed to Feb 13th
>> From teamavalaunch.com:
Sorry folks, but we have to bump up the deadline for the Logo Contest. Due to time constraints we are going to have to have the logo in to the shop by the 15th, which means we need to have all entries in by Feb 12th at Midnight (technically, Feb 13 :)). We have gotten a really good response thus far, so keep up the good work, and push yourselves a little harder :) Since we're shortening it, we decided to add a second and third place prize as well, which will be a shiny new Avalaunch(info) hat. Finally, some people are having issues emailing us their .psds, so please try to zip them first, and if possible, name the psd as: your_name.psd for easy categorizing.
(Europe) Limited-edition crystal Xbox
>> From gamespot.com:
Just weeks after Microsoft announced two special-edition Xboxes for the Japanese market, details have emerged about a new limited-issue Xbox for Europe. The "Crystal Pack" will feature a clear, translucent console and two controllers with the same frosty, Fortress-of-Solitude-style finish.
According to reports, the Crystal Pack will go on sale on March 14th, the second anniversary of the Xbox's launch in Europe. While the console's packaging states it will be a limited edition, Microsoft has released no details about a price point or how many units will be put on the market.
(USA) Pricedrop to 129.99USD or even 99USD + Xbox2 for 2005? *updated*
>> Today's extended third-quarter financial results from Electronic Arts revealed some juicy information. From xbox.ign.com:
... The last big tidbit worth mentioning, is that EA anticipates a price drop for the PlayStation 2 and Xbox systems before Labor Day. Estimates place the price drop to somewhere around $129.99
Update: From money.cnn.com:
Microsoft's Xbox may be on the verge of a substantial price cut, falling from $179 to $99 by Labor Day, according to P.J. McNealy, an analyst with American Technology Research. "It is our belief that the price on the consoles in North America could see a stepped drop this year, with both the PS2 and Xbox being cut to $129 between now and the May E3 trade show, with [Microsoft] then cutting the Xbox further to $99 in the late summer," he wrote in a research note released Wednesday.
McNealy also believes Microsoft will launch its next generation console in late 2005 a year earlier than has been previously rumored. That would put the Xbox 2 on store shelves up to a full year before Sony's PlayStation 3.
Microsoft, when asked about the report, said it does not comment on rumors and speculation.
More on money.cnn.com

Openmosix support in Gentoox
>> From gentoox.shallax.com:
I have a patch written, which I believe works properly (still need to fully test it), that enables openmosix support in Gentoox. Basically this is similar to distcc, but will distribute more than just compilation tasks... i.e. it will share system load between any other systems running openmosix. The problem is, when enabled, openmosix segfaults randomly whilst running emerge. This can be stopped by disabling openmosix (run /etc/init.d/openmosix stop). Once stopped, the system will behave as if openmosix isnt installed at all, therefore its recommended that users disable openmosix before running emerge. I'm in two minds as whether to release this patch or not, so I thought I'd leave it up to the users. Vote on the poll, I'll do whatever the result is. In future releases of Home edition, the firstboot script will give the user the option of enabling/disabling openmosix. I'd also add an easy to use script that will toggle openmosix support.
Work In Progress: XBConnect 4.0
>> From xbconnect.com:
XBC 4 is near complete. We are testing internally and polishing up the interface. XBConnect plugins are the final feature we are adding. I suspect the Mac version will be released shortly after XBC 4. Looking for a release date? I expect the second week in Feb.
XBC 4 has added a few features for dedicated hosts. For this reason we have setup a dedicated host application form. Visor has also setup a Clan database. If your in clan, we suggest you head over there.
(Europe) Xbox holds second place as Live takes off
>> From gamesindustry.biz:
New figures from Microsoft show that Xbox is still well ahead of Nintendo's GameCube in terms of European sales, with a 3.7 million unit installed base at the end of 2003 and Xbox Live shooting past 100,000 users. That 3.7 million figure compares with the GameCube's installed base of just under 3 million units at the end of the year - although both look rather irrelevant when compared with the PS2's PAL installed base of well over 20 million units. The Xbox is currently leading the GameCube by a margin of under a million units in both the USA and Europe (around 0.8 million in the US, and 0.7 million in Europe), but the tables are turned in the Far East, where GameCube makes up the difference and grabs a slight lead over its rival in global terms. Xbox Live 3.0
>> From computerandvideogames.com:
Microsoft is to introduce a significant update to its dedicated online gaming service Xbox Live this Spring, according to reports. Version 3.0 of the service is rumoured to bring with it a number of interesting and handy enhancements, unconfirmed details of which have squirmed their way onto the ever informative Internet. We expect users will welcome the additions with open arms...
Key supposed areas of focus for the update include added communication functions and upgrades that centre around team and clan support. On the communications side, Microsoft is rumoured to be introducing voice and text messaging, allowing players to send and receive voice and text messages in any Xbox game that supports this capability - voicemail is also apparently coming. As for clan features, players will reportedly be able to come together to create a single entity or unit - importantly in this respect, statistics tracking is being updated. As of Xbox Live 3.0, stats and records for teams created for online challenges can be carried through subsequent multiplayer bouts, according to the rumours. Additionally, it's being suggested that Xbox Live 3.0 will come with "off site" storage, players able to store up to 32K of personal data on Xbox Live servers - one plus here is that you'd be able to access such data from any Xbox on Xbox Live - and that there'll also be a function introduced allowing users to transfer information across four "family" feature-supporting titles - e.g. you could create a boxer in one game and then use the same fighter in three other titles, or something along those lines.
Rumour has Xbox Live 3.0 sounding a saucy little minx, but at present details remain unverified. Frustratingly, Microsoft was unavailable for comment at the time of going to press.
Microsoft to take over MikeRoweSoft.com for an Xbox

Desler said Microsoft would cover Mike's costs of changing to a new Web site and redirecting traffic from the old site. Microsoft also had agreed to help the teen get Microsoft certification training and other gifts, including an Xbox game console, he said, and has invited Mike to a technology festival in March at the corporation's headquarters in suburban Redmond. Gentoox Focus support
>> From gentoox.shallax.com:
Welp, I just finished installing Gentoox Home(info) 3.0 and running magic. Focus support works perfectly without any changes, so I dont have a clue where all these issues are comming from. All I can suggest is reinstalling and running magic. Really - I havent touched a thing or done any special hacking to get it working EXCEPT im using the new Cromwell(info) that I've put in the misc download section as this supports both HDTV and Focus... but thats it.
People are also complaining about their screens going black, this is probably because you are setting your HOC and VOC settings too high, really you shouldnt need to go any higher than 10 for either. Going too high will either kill the video signal, or look awful.
With regards to Focus, what remains to be done is overscan correction, with which progress has been made... and higher resolutions. Once the driver supports these, I can improve XBVSET to support them. For now, all we have is hellishly overscanned 640x480 - which is better than nothing ;) Also, the Focus settings seem to give much more vivid colours.
(USA) Video game hardware sales fall
>> From ft.com:
US sales of video games consoles fell by more than a quarter during 2003, according to industry figures to be published on Monday. The decline reflects waning enthusiasm among consumers for the current generation of hardware and the reluctance of Sony and Microsoft to make deep price cuts. Annual sales of consoles such as the Microsoft Xbox, Sony PlayStation2 and Nintendo GameCube slid 27 per cent to $2.2bn in 2003, according to NPD, the market research company. Unit sales fell 15 per cent.
While hardware sales were disappointing, games software sales remained strong.
