XECUTER2 BIOS 4979
>> Team Xecuter released their new Xbox BIOS.
What's new/fixed (Changes 4978.03 - 4979):
- Added Focus Video Encoder Support (xbox v1.4/v1.5)
- Embedded OzPaulb's LBA48 Hack
- Added MS Dash clock check skip
- Removed embedded FTP (was simply a proof of concept anyway)
- Resized and optimized back to 256k
- Clean up of code and some general bug fixes
- 4979.06 = LBA48 6
- 4979.67 = LBA48 6+7

More news from the readme:
[QUOTE]
Well folks it's been a long time in the making but we finally cracked it. As most of you know the new v1.4 and v1.5 Xbox had a new FOCUS video encoder (FS454) which replaced the old Conexant version (CX25871) and video output could no longer be generated.

Evox implemented their old hacks to the new 5101 kernel and that all worked fine, however Xecuter doesn't patch the MS kernel, we use source code to develop our advanced patches and hacks, but without the source code for the Focus encoder we were pretty much stuffed. After many weeks of hardcore low level hacking we have successfully developed the Focus source code from scratch and are pleased to announce a fully working X2 bios with Focus support embedded for your enjoyment. Now you can use all the extra features you've all come to expect from Xecuter :)

Another couple of features include the skipping of the MS Dash clock check which has been requested many times. This enables you to boot from DVD correctly when setting up a new hard disk without any problems or errors. This gets rid of Error 16 problems.

We have also intergrated OzPaulb's fantastic LBA48 hack which we had to painstaiknigly convert from Assembly to C source. This is now embedded into our X2 source so you can use two versions of our bios.
One for LBA48 6 and one for LBA 48 6+7 (LBA48 6 is one large F partition - recommened for new HD installs, and LBA48 6+7 is for those who want to extend your current F drive to its larger size without losing any data). For those who dont know you were previousley limited to a 137GB drive - now you can have up to 2 TB :) (2199023255040 bytes) or 2000 Gb for the *ahem* uninformed.

We've also added a "fix" section in this nfo that solves many crashing problems that some of you maybe experiencing with your games / apps - check it out.

X2 4979 will most likely be the last bios in the X2 series, as well as the X2.3 hardware design (with new power adapter). We thank you all for your generous support over the last 2 years and we will be seeing you soon with the feature packed X3 hardware and software.

HAVE A GREAT CHRISTMAS - SEE YOU IN 2004 !!!!

Notes
------
You should be made aware of some issues that we discovered and has probably had some of you tearing your hair out.
If you have games like GTA, GTA Vice City and Fifa 2004 etc and they are crashing during the game then you will find they operate and AUTOSAVE check which uses your system clock. Now if your system clock is corrupt then it will crash a number of titles which use AUTOSAVE. One clock we found corrupt had a date/time setting of 15/11/8097. The second the clock was fixed in the MS Dash all the games that crashed worked just fine with no problems whatsoever.
You should also be aware that some apps especially FlashX(info) v1.2 are also crashing - this is down to the EVOX IGR. You should disable all EVOX IGR and this will get things moving nicely.
If you have any questions / bug reports / success reports please post in this thread.

(AUS) Ban on Project Gotham Racing 2 ?
>> From www.smh.com.au:
[QUOTE]
Road safety authorities are trying to pull the plug on a new computer game that encourages players to hoon through the streets of Sydney.

"Burn up a storm past famous landmarks such as the Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge," says the promotional material for Project Gotham Racing 2, by Xbox.
The game is "the ultimate test of racing skill, style and daring, rewarding drivers not only for how fast they drive but for how they drive fast," it says. "Drivers will earn kudos and gain recognition for cornering on two wheels around the Sears Tower in Chicago, or power sliding through the ancient streets of Florence, Italy."

State Labor MP Paul Gibson, chairman of the Staysafe Committee, intends to take the matter up with the Office of Film and Literature Classification, which approves such games for sale in Australia, and which issued a G rating to Project Gotham Racing 2.
"This game sends the wrong message to young people. It is actually glorifying speed and power," Mr Gibson said. "It is clearly an inappropriate depiction of speed behaviour. If I had my way I would ban it."

Jihad Project - Physics: The hard stuff
>> For those who forgot about this 'multiplayer homebrew 3D arcade/adventure xbox game' project, you can find a description here.

News update from 'The unProfessional' on theunprofessional.com:
[QUOTE]
YES! The project is still in motion. I've been hitting this thing every crack of time I can find. This is where development gets hard... and fun. Currently, I'm using the Tokamak dynamics engine to aid in vehicle physics. I've had some good luck, and a hell of a lot of bad luck. For the most part, Tokamak is extremely powerful and well-written. However, the documentation is in its infancy, and due to the relative young age of the library, it isn't free of bugs. I believe I'll be switching to ODE, as it seems to be well-tested in the field of vehicle physics, and I believe the friction model in ODE is much more realistic. Have you ever seen a tank fishtail? Exactly... neither have I. Don't give me wrong; Tokamak's great. I just don't think it's the best choice for vehicle physics (suspension, tire friction, etc).

Neil and I have formed a strong partnership in the development of this game. He is constantly involved in the creative design of the game and listening to me rant about poorly applied physics =] This project has turned out to be on a much larger scale than originally planned. Alot of modern components are going into this game. It is quite an endeavor for two people, but it's fun and it's worth it. But don't fear, fun is the primary objective. But have you seen any homebrew games with true rigid body physics? Shoot... a handful of professional (30 person team) games have it: HL2, Max Payne 2, and a few others. Even HALO applied such physics only to vehicles.

Microsoft breaks down its earnings
>> News.com and washingtonpost.com posted an article about Microsoft's profits and losses this last (financial) quarter (ended Sept. 30).
The only interesting part for here is that the home and entertainment unit (that includes the Xbox video game machine) saw its loss widen to $273 million from $245 million a year ago.
But that's not anything to really worry about for Microsoft, they had a total operating profit of $3.15 billion and ended the quarter with $51.62 billion in cash and short-term investments, up from $49.05 billion as of June 30.

Xbox Japan Boss Explains New Price Cuts
>> From games.slashdot.org:
[QUOTE]
Thanks to 1UP for their article covering Japanese Xbox boss Yoshihiro Maruyama's comments regarding yesterday's significant Xbox price drop in Japan. Maruyama explained that the price cut wasn't a reaction to Sony's Japanese PS2 price drop: "This discount was in the works for the end-of-year shopping season before SCE's announcement. The timing was on our own terms, and we aren't simply following the leader here." He also tried to explain why the Japanese videogame market is shrinking, suggesting: "You see companies in the U.S. using a multiplatform strategy, developing games for several consoles at once, with Electronic Arts leading the way. However, Japan concentrates all its development on the top platform alone, so it's easy to run into dead ends."

(ASIA) Too many modded Xboxes for Xlive ?
>> From news.zdnet.co.uk:
[QUOTE]
Microsoft has finally launched its Xbox Live online gaming service in Asia, but it faces a challenge in the region due to the prevalence of mod chips.

Bowman, Asia Pacific general manager for Microsoft's home and entertainment division, declined to guess how many Xbox consoles in Asia are of the modified variety, saying that no definitive study had been done.
However, he said that "we acknowledge that some people in Southeast Asia -- just like people in other regions where we have released Xbox Live -- have chipped consoles and will, therefore, not be able to enjoy Xbox Live or authorised aftersales service and support."

Chin Jun Fwu, programme manager of Asia-Pacific online gaming for analysts IDC also declined to speculate on the popularity of modified consoles, but admitted that software piracy is rampant.
"It will be challenging for Microsoft. Southeast Asia is still immature when it comes to legal software," he said.
Microsoft's Xbox Live will have a good chance of success if an online game with adult appeal becomes available, said Chin. Adults can better afford original software and subscription fees, compared with the usual teen gaming crowd, he said.

NeoGenesis v12
>> NeoGenesis(info) Sega Genesis/Megadrive/32X/SegaCD/MegaCD Emulator for XBox v12

Whats New/Fixed:
* Memory corruption fix when loading Sega CD games. If you were having problems with certain SegaCD games not working (e.g. Secret of Monkey Island, or anything, really) then this should probably fix it. Some debugging code was left in and if the filename length of your SegaCD files was more than about 65 characters (including the path) then there would be a buffer overflow. So if you had a long filename like
E:\\GAMES\\SEGA\\SEGACDS\\SECRET_OF_MONKEY_ISLAND\\ SECRET_MONKEY_ISLAND_02.MP3 then things would get screwy.
* Support for Linux Relax sharing
At this time, your linux share name must contain the "/" character somewhere if you want it to be recognized as a linux share.
For example :
rlxshare=/home/player/roms@192.168.1.30:1400
* Possible Samba fix/improvement : see next item
* New network configuration parameters : XBox IP, Subnet Mask, Gateway IP. Access these through the Configuration -> Network Options menu or change them in the INI file :
[GENERAL]
LOCAL_IP=192.168.1.30
SUBNET_MASK=255.255.255.0
GATEWAY_IP=192.168.1.254
LOCAL_IP is the XBox IP address
SUBNET_MASK is the subnet mask
GATEWAY_IP is your default gateway
Set these to the same values you use in your XBMP configuration file.
This might help people with Samba issues.
* If you were having Linux+Relax or Samba issues, then I suggest you try this version of NeoGenesis. If this fixes the problems people have been having, then the changes will go into all the ports I've done. If not, then I probably will not bother...so I need to hear feedback.

(USA) No price cuts coming before holidays
>> From msnbc.com:
[QUOTE]
VIDEO-GAMERS ARE hoping the price war between Sonyís PlayStation 2 and Microsoftís Xbox thatís flaring up in Japan will spread to the U.S., which would be perfect timing with the holiday season around the corner.
But analysts say donít hold your breath. They point out that Sony traditionally cuts prices after the holidays in order to capture as much of the seasonís profits as possible.
Microsoft has typically followed Sonyís lead with price cuts, and itís already bundling 2 free games and 2 free months of its Xbox Live online service at the same $180 price point.

Some say that makes a pre-holiday price cut on the Xbox unlikely. Also, as Wedbush Morgan securities analyst Michael Pachter points out, with strong demand for video games and video game consoles expected for the season, why in the world would these companies want to cut prices?
ďWe think Microsoft and Sony will sell about 7 million consoles combined [in] November,Ē Pachter said. ďFor them to cut the price by $30 would be making a wealth transfer of $210 million to consumers. I donít think either of those companies is set up as a charity. I think that as long as they can hit their sales goals with a price cut in January they will do so.Ē

News from Team Xecuter: X2.3 in stores next week and fix for load problems
>> From teamxecuter.com:
[QUOTE]
* After much testing and fine tuning to the PCB design, the X2.3 is now ready for shipping. We've decided to leave the 5v / 3.3v detector LED's as TBH they are not really needed if you are going to be drawing a true power source from the new USB adapter. We've also designed a new LITE programmer to be 2.3 compatible. The LITE+ now uses less pogo pins so the install is practically touble free when also using the new pogo designs. Of course this also means less wires = less chance of a screw up.

* I've seen quite a few posts these last few days about certain games not working or some people and not others. Well after investigation we found that it was down to a corrupt system clock. The game has an AUTOSAVE feature that doesn't work if the clock is all screwed so it either crashes or refuses to load. If you are having these issues go into your MS dash and set your clock manually and try again - you will find this most probably fixes your problem.

neXgen, SourceForge and Future
>> From xboxopensource.com:
[QUOTE]
Well I guess we started nexgen with nothing but the help of the original devs & some friends from the UK. Today I guess we have got something but this something isnít good enough. With the respect of one of our main coders, personal life has fallen into the way of nexgen & as any 1 else would do they would chose life over coding.

This has reduced the time & effort we can add into releasing a public working nexgen build. Donít get me wrong we are not giving up on nexgen but were expanding. We are now going to rely on the people from the Xbox community to help us out. With the support of BenJeremy & ^Blazed^ to go opensource & with the offer of many people im sure we will have a few versions of nexgen out there running before Christmas.

So with this we will start uploading our sources as soon as we get our logging details to our account at SOURCEFORGE. Im confident that this project will pick up as soon as itís released on source forge & the hard work that our devs have put over the month wonít be wasted.

If you donít believe how much work was added compare the original sources released but the old nexgen dev team to the sources we will release you will be surprised. Please don't put all this hard work to waste our devs will still be working on nexgen.

As I said before Team XOS is not dead but is actually been reborn. I would like to see the help from the Xbox community 2 finish this project off as it has much potential & would like any 1 that uses any of our work 2 at least credit us & the original nexgen devs for it.
Lastly I would like 2 thank BenJeremy, Xantium, Zeus, Ozshadow, The_Mad_M, Swolsten, Sphynx, A-KO, and any one else I have missed out for there help , support & contribution to the Xbox community & for the lovely source code they have made public for every one to use & learn from.

I will notify everyone when our source is uploaded & what our source forge URL will be.
Please join our room #xboxopensource on the efnet server & post on our forums on www.xbox-scene.com.

(Europe) GameCube claims second place, but UK sales fall
>> From gamesindustry.biz:
[QUOTE]
Nintendo has this morning claimed that the GameCube has increased its market share across Europe five-fold in the past three weeks, and now holds 25 per cent of the market - putting it ahead of Microsoft's Xbox.

However, the latest figures from Chart-Track show that while the Cube may be doing well in Europe as a whole, its performance in the UK leaves much to be desired - with the console being outsold by the PS2 by a factor of 7.5 to one, and lagging the Xbox by a factor of almost 2.5 to one.
These figures show a 15 per cent week on week drop in sales of the Cube, while the Xbox increased its sales slightly, with a three per cent rise in the weekly figures - although it's still behind the PS2 by a factor of three to one.

Although Nintendo has made plenty of noise about its sales triumphs this month, with the company claiming second place both in Europe and the USA, rival Microsoft has been uncharacteristically silent regarding its own achievements. This is unlikely to be a tacit admission that Nintendo is actually winning the seasonal sales battle so far this year; we can only assume that the inevitable Microsoft PR onslaught is just running a little later than usual.

EA "actively talking" with MS over Xbox Live
>> From gamesindustry.biz:
[QUOTE]
Although all of Electronic Arts' Christmas line-up will roll out without online support on the Xbox this year, the publisher is still in talks with Microsoft about adopting the Xbox Live service and is hopeful of a resolution.
EA's lack of support for Live has been a major stumbling block for the service, with the pinch being felt especially in terms of the company's massive-selling sports titles. Many of those are online-enabled on the PS2 this Christmas - but on the Xbox, despite the more advanced online gaming setup, they remain resolutely offline, a state of affairs which has frustrated consumers.

It's not clear what the remaining differences between Microsoft and EA are, although it's thought that EA's initial reticence to support Live was founded on a number of issues ranging from revenue models and branding through to Microsoft's insistence that all titles on the Live service have a minimum term of availability.

Microsoft turns to technology licensing for Xbox Next
>> From gamesindustry.biz:
[QUOTE]
Recent agreements signed by Microsoft with a variety of companies to supply technology for the successor to Xbox reveal that the company is switching to the manufacturing model preferred by its rivals.

Rather than buying devices which are effectively PC components from manufacturers, Microsoft's next generation plan revolves around licensing technology designs from key suppliers such as ATI, IBM and SIS Technologies, and then arranging for the manufacture of these chipsets itself - effectively becoming a full-scale chip maker, albeit one without a fabrication plant of its own.
This new approach means that rather than selling components to Microsoft, as NVIDIA and Intel do, ATI and IBM will be receiving royalties for the use of their technology - but Microsoft will have ultimate control over the manufacturing and final use of that technology, effectively giving the company far more control over its own platform, and the ability to make significant cost savings on manufacture.

Another benefit for Microsoft is that this form of technology licensing will make the Xenon platform into a far more proprietary system than the Xbox, thus making it far less likely that people will be able to hack the system to run PC software. This has been a major problem for the Xbox to date - the inclusion of PC components in the box was a red flag to a bull as far as software hackers were concerned, and it's thought that many Xboxen are now used as home media centres and emulators rather than as games consoles as a result.

Although this will probably deter the hackers to some degree, and the business and manufacturing model open to Microsoft will almost certainly save it significant amounts of money (with actual physical manufacture of the chips likely to be outsourced either to the Far East or back to IBM itself), it has its drawbacks. The company touted the Xbox as the easiest platform of its generation to develop on because it was so similar to the PC; this will not necessarily hold true for Xenon, which won't be based on an x86 architecture like the Xbox and the PC. Making life tougher for the hackers may also make it tougher for legitimate developers - and there are also major question marks over how this console will manage to maintain backwards compatibility and play Xbox games, with rumours abounding that Microsoft has approached emulation specialists Connectix with a view to solving this thorny issue.

Alternative LFRAME on v1.3+ confirmed + (Tightmod) tutorial
>> The alternative LFRAME point (found by Romeo) has been confirmed to be working by several people on all v1.3+ xbox versions. The point is far from being easy to solder, but still this means it is now possible to use 'cheapmods' and older modchips that needed #LFRAME (LPC point #3 that got disconnect by Microsoft in v1.3+) on xbox v1.3, v1.4 and v1.5.

For those who missed the news earlier (yesterday) about it, click here.

Littlejonny also posted a tutorial on the Xbox-Scene Forums about how to make your homebrew cheapmod work on a v1.3+ xbox (he renamed it Tightmod):
[QUOTE]
OK guys, ask and you shall receive, the full tuturial on how its done, confirmed several times in our shop to work 100%.

Ive tested this on all models from 1.0-1.5 and it takes our techs only 15-20min from start to finish. when using the correct technique this is a very simple solder join, but must be done with a good iron (i use weller).

You can download the full tutorial here (written by littlejonny).
